Sciatica
About Sciatica
Sciatica refers to pain that starts in your lower back and radiates through your hips and buttocks and down the back of the leg. Other symptoms besides pain can include tingling and numbness along the nerve path. Sciatica does not necessarily come from any one particular cause; it is a symptom of various different conditions.
Common Causes of Sciatica
- Degenerative disc disease
- Herniated discs
- Spinal stenosis
- Sacro-iliac joint disease or dysfunction
- Peripheral nerve entrapment syndromes
Treatment of Sciatica
Sciatica occurs from compression of a deep spinal nerve root along with inflammation of the nerve. Often this can be treated with cortisone or steroid injections. Steroids are very potent anti-inflammatory medications that can be injected directly into an inflamed area or along an inflamed nerve, and will lead to a reduction in inflammation and pain.
